Men's Health

Non-urgent advice:

In the UK 1 in 5 men die before the age of 65.

There are many reasons why men and boys don’t seek medical help. The traditional stereotype sees men as being tough and strong, and who don’t show any weakness.

Some men feel that they would rather not know if there’s anything wrong rather than face an embarrassing conversation or examination or even worse, getting bad news.

This reluctance means that men don’t seek help until a disease has progressed.

Your GP and nurse can help you. Start by making an appointment for a health check. There are also many support services that are available for men and a wide range of information, some of which are listed below:

g

  • Prostate Cancer: Prostate cancer affects approximately 1 in 8 men. While not always life-threatening, early diagnosis significantly increases the likelihood of a cure.
  • Mens Health Forum: A charity dedicated to reducing the high rate of premature deaths among men, offering advice and information on a wide range of men’s health issues.
  • Banter and Brews Men's Support Group: A support group for men aged 18 and over based in Reddish. Who provides a relaxed, social space for those who may feel lonely, isolated, or bored, as well as for men facing challenges
  • Andys Man Club: UK‑based men’s mental health & suicide‑prevention charity that runs free peer‑to‑peer support groups for men aged 18 and over. It provides a safe, non‑judgemental space where men can talk about problems they are facing or simply listen if they prefer. There is a group based in Woodley, Stockport.
  • Stockport Talking Therapires: For anyone who lives in Stockport or whose GP surgery is based there. You don’t need a GP referral to access this service.
